Questions about church

When I was praying, God gave me this title for an article for the blog and, at first,
I wondered if he wanted me to research or even make-up a list of ‘common questions’ that I could address. Then he spoke to my heart again, he said:

‘If you’ve got questions about church you can resolve them all by picking up a relationship with Christ. I say ‘pick up’ because the ball is in your court.’

As I was thinking about this I was very relieved. In 2004 I was involved in producing a Christian dvd series for the denomination I belonged to. The programmes used a talk-show format with a host and a revolving roster of ‘guests’. I was one of the guests and it was my job to bring to the group questions that ‘people’ were asking about God, which would form the basis for our discussion. The only snag was that no one had done the ‘research on the street’, so I was given the task of making up questions, that the producers wanted to ‘answer’.

Well, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, primarily, from my perspective, God has blessed me with the water of His Word and His Holy Spirit. Rather than addressing made-up questions that no one’s actually asking, now, I can let God lead me to talk about what He wants to talk about. As I once heard Mike Pilavachi say, ‘It saves hours in meetings!’

So, you came to this article with questions about the church. The church is made-up of people, lots of people, so there’s all sorts of baggage and confusion because people are messy. Give people enough time doing something on their own, without God’s direction, I guarantee, they’ll make a mess! Holy mess or unholy mess, it’ll still be a mess. Doctrine, rules, traditions, hypocrisy, compromise, even lies and willful rebellion, that’s the fruit of people going it alone.

So, rather than talk about the mess, let’s cut to the chase and talk about the two things God really wants you to know about:

  1. Grace
  2. Faith

Grace means that God has already given you everything He’s got to give – the ball is in your court.

Faith is your choice to believe the above statement and pick up the ball – ask Jesus to be the Lord (leader, chief, CEO) of your life.

Have you done that? Yes, then we can move on.

You see, despite all the mess, church is still something that God created. He is the originator of the gathering of believers. It’s his idea.

What you need in order to navigate any questions you have about church is the Holy Spirit. Now, if you’ve said yes to Jesus, you already received the bonus pack of His Spirit, living on the inside of you to lead you and to guide you into all truth!

Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’ (John 14: 6). John called Jesus the ‘Word made flesh’ (John 1: 14). So, let the Holy Spirit guide you into God’s Word (the Bible) and He will help you to find answers to all of your questions. It’s a bold claim, but I believe it. And if the answers don’t come right away, just trust that they’re on their way. Put your query in the ‘I don’t understand that just yet’ pile and, as Psalm 37: 7 says, ‘Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.’

God won’t leave you hanging too long. If you hang-out with him, you’ll soon have all your questions answered or maybe your relationship with Jesus will be so good that those questions will just settle to the bottom of the pile.

If you think this article has been a cop-out, if you think I’ve dodged the issue, think again, perhaps you’re dodging THE issue. The Bible says in 1 John 5: 12 ‘Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.’ Jesus IS your answer, He is the one who can give you wisdom and understanding and He has promised to give you His Spirit to ‘lead you into all truth’ (John 16: 12).

Jesus loves you. His Spirit is your helper. Rest in Him today. You are blessed!
